Sometimes you encounter situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

The earthquake struck suddenly, consuming entire cities in its sweep. Buildings shattered like sandcastles, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of morning hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was getting ready out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was extremely running behind for work.
I sweating. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. turned sour. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind here of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
